Professor Girguis is an Assistant Professor of Microbial Biology in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University where
his lab focuses on the ecological physiology of marine microbes. Prior to Harvard, he held post-doctoral, research and adjunct teaching positions at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and the University of Washington. Professor Girguis has published and lectured extensively on MFCs and deep-sea ecology, with credits including the journals
Science, Nature and
The Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. He has received numerous awards for his discoveries in MFCs and his teaching. Professor Girguis is also active in promoting science education at the K-12 level through non-profit organizations he has founded. Peter earned a BSc with Honors from the University of California, Los Angeles and holds a PhD in Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Peter is an expert in the design of low-energy circuits and is a co-inventor with Professor Girguis of Living Power’s MFC. He has 35 years of research and engineering experience and is presently a Research Scientist and Engineer in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington and President/Engineer of Northwest Metasystems, which supplies custom-designed devices and sensors to scientists and research organizations. His research has been published in the Journal of Power Sources and the Journal of Physical Research. Peter is also active in international development non-profit organizations and studied chemistry and molecular biology at Haverford College.
